Soft Soil, Groundwater and Tight Access: Excavation Problems in New Orleans

What happens when a New Orleans dig meets groundwater, soft clay, buried slabs or a narrow gate, plus soil tests and lawn repair. Call (504) 608-4795.

New Orleans has no rock to hit; it has water and soft ground. HomeGuide's national figures put heavy, wet soil at $10 to $15 per cubic yard, against $2.50 to $6.00 for light soil.

Prices here are HomeGuide's published national ranges, not quotes from our company. In New Orleans, groundwater, soft soil, narrow streets, buried debris and the trip to the dump site move the real cost. Checked October 2026.

What happens to the price if the excavator hits rock?

If a dig hits rock, the price goes up because a breaker has to do the work, and HomeGuide lists that at $50 to $200 or more per cubic yard. In New Orleans, natural rock is not found at digging depth. What crews hit instead are old slabs, brick footings, cisterns and buried concrete, which are priced the same way.

How deep is bedrock in New Orleans?

There is no bedrock anywhere near the surface in New Orleans. The city sits on thousands of feet of river sediment, so no home excavation will reach rock. The limits here are groundwater a few feet down and soft soil that will not hold a steep wall.

What if the ground is too wet or the clay soil is too soft?

When the ground is too wet, trench walls slump, machines sink and fill will not compact, so we pump, shore, use mats and wait for drier days for grading and backfill. Frozen ground is never the problem here; water is.

Do I need a soil test before building?

For a new house or a large addition, yes: a geotechnical report tells the engineer how soft the soil is, how much it will settle and whether piles are needed. Expect $1,000 to $5,000 for a geotechnical report on HomeGuide's figures; a basic soil test is $10 to $100 or more.

How do you get a machine into a back yard through a narrow gate?

Through a narrow gate, alley or side yard, we use a mini excavator or a compact loader, and sometimes take down a fence section and put it back. The smallest machines fit through openings about three feet wide. Where there is no access at all, the work is done by hand.

Will heavy equipment damage my lawn, and who fixes it?

Machines leave tracks, and soft, wet New Orleans lawns rut deeply. We lay ground mats, keep to one path and avoid working on soaked ground. Put lawn repair in the contract, with who does it and how. Topsoil costs $10 to $50 a cubic yard on HomeGuide's fill page, and spreading it $200 to $400.

What if the excavator finds an old buried foundation, cistern or contaminated soil?

Old slabs, brick footings, buried foundations and cisterns are found on many New Orleans lots, and they are broken out and hauled. Soil that smells of fuel or chemicals, or flood debris buried after a storm, is different: work stops and the soil is tested first. Testing a soil sample for contaminants costs $25 to $200 by HomeGuide's figures.
