Fill is one of the most common things we bring to New Orleans lots. Yards settle, low spots hold water and building pads need to be raised. We deliver and place fill dirt, sand, river sand, topsoil and crushed stone, and we haul away spoil, broken concrete, brush and debris. Truck access on narrow streets is part of the plan, and some loads go in by skid steer from the curb.
Each use calls for a different material. Clay fill holds its shape and is good for raising and grading yards. Sand is used for bedding pipe and under pavers but washes out without edges. Topsoil goes on top for grass. Under a building, the engineer specifies the fill and the compaction, and loose dirt dumped in a low spot will simply sink again.
We place fill in thin layers and compact each one, so it settles as little as possible. Before raising a yard, we check that the new grade will still drain to the street and will not push water onto the neighbors. Some parishes and cities have rules on fill and elevation, which we confirm for your address. A low yard is often best raised in two passes, months apart.

Can you haul away an old slab?
Yes. We break it up, load it and haul it, and concrete can often be recycled.
What fill should I use to raise my yard?
Usually a clay-based fill under a topsoil layer. Sand alone washes out of yards in heavy rain.
